Mark Making Tray
A writing tray is very simple to put together and does not even need to be a tray, a table top works just as well.
In terms of what to use in it, there are a lot of choices, in this one is fake snow, but flour with a little glitter or just flour works just as well. Hot chocolate powder also works. There are lots of ideas on Google if you need inspiration.
The purpose of this activity is to develop fine motor skills, finger isolation to mark make and developing pre writing shapes- the shapes that are learnt before writing takes place. Over the next few weeks we will explore these in different ways,
As with any activity this can be structured but also have elements of freedom.
An adult can work with the pupil to make the shapes hand over hand... reinforcing verbally what shape they are making and encouraging them to look. The shapes can also be reinforced visually with pictures.
The freedom comes from allowing the pupil to explore and randomly mark make. This develops cause and effect and also encourages them to begin mark making.
