Sensory Stories

Not all children communicate in the same way. This is where Sensory Stories come in. They are stories translated into the language of the senses.

A sensory story is telling of the story through stimulating the senses - touch, taste, smell, sight and sounds. There may be a little bit of 'text' a sentence, or even a whole chunk of story, or there may be none at all.  It all depends on the audience.

Example of a sensory story

Goldilocks and the three bears

Opportunities to explore using their senses: -

  • Visual – different size teddy bears/chairs and beds.
  • Touch – a range of different tactile materials to go on the bears beds.
  • Smell/taste – porridge with different toppings
  • Sounds – rustling leaves for walking in the woods/crashing sounds for broken chair
